New Zealand – Lake Taupo with kids

November 21, 2018 0 By Peter and Caira

Famous for its vast Lake Taupo, there really is something for everyone here.  Numerous family friendly activities can be found on the lake; swimming, scenic cruises, fishing, kayaking, rapids jet boating.  On land, activities such as ‘Taupo Museum and Ora Garden of Wellbeing’ , ‘Huka Prawn Park’  , and ‘Huka Honey Hive’ are available most days of the year and are not very expensive.  Being located on geothermal ground, there are also many hot pools readily available.  Popular spots are the ‘Warm Water Playground’ at DeBrett’s, Taupo Hot Springs Pools and the Tokaanu Thermal Pools near Turangi.

Where we stayed:

We were staying with visiting family so booked a fantastic house through AirBnB which had bedrooms and living space over 2 levels, perfect for shared living and not far from Lake Taupo.  There are also plenty of baches available through Bookabach and motel/hotel accommodation can be sought using ‘’

Children friendly must do’s:

If you love decent coffee, quirky art and chillaxed surroundings, Café L’Arte in Acacia Bay is not to be missed.  Furthermore, enroute there is a beautiful wooden playground, complete with its own pirate ship, overlooking the lake for a handy pit-stop for the kiddies

Scooting and cycling down to the lake

Mum’s favourite bit:

“Twenty minutes of ‘me’ time whilst the kids entertained themselves at the playground at the Tongariro South Domain”

Dad’s favourite bit:

“Sinking a couple in the Bief Kafe Crafty Trout upstairs from ‘Crafty Trout Brewing Co’. They had toys for kids to play with too whilst we all munched on the Pretzels ”

Lovely day – not much of a catch though

Kids favourite bit:

5 year old “When we played in the water and we laughed”

3 year old “Prawn Park!”

A great range of BYO Restaurants in Taupo

Best Zero waste bit:

Bin Inn based in the Spa Gate shopping centre, Taupo, is by far the best zero waste store.  There are a mutlitude of different products all stored in big containers.  Take your own containers for an additional 10% off:
